First, I ensured that the battery was properly seated.

WARNING: THE BATTERY CANNOT BE IDENTIFIED. THIS SYSTEM WILL BE UNABLE
TO CHARGE THIS BATTERY. — The battery may be installed incorrectly, or the
battery or system board may be defective.

Then, I shut down the laptop, removed the battery and adapter, then held down the power button for 10 seconds. Restored power, but this method didn’t work. Instead, I flashed the BIOS with version 2.6.3, A16. This worked.

Furthermore, the following fatal error is reported:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
    to your computer. 0x00000024

This stop code indicates the NTFS file system driver encountered a situation it could not handle, and is almost always caused by 2 things:
    •Data corruption on the disk
    •Data corruption in memory
Memory diagnostics passed. I used a Windows XP boot disk to get recovery tools. Ran chkdsk /f c:. Many errors discovered and repaired. Normal boot-up was achieved. Dell Backup & Recovery utility ran a scheduled diagnostic. All phases passed.

Updated dozens of programs: Windows Updates, Internet Explorer upgrade, Java, iTunes, Quick Time, Security Essentials. General clean-up.

Data will be backed-up as a precaution because this hard drive might be on the verge of failing.
