I was able to access the HP Recovery Manager by using F11 at start-up. It offered a means by which to back-up personal data, but it required a storage device with 61GB of free memory. I took the unit to the shop. I removed the back (nine screws), released the CD drive, removed the HD housing and connected to the drive directly with a SATA-to-USB device. No files were found on the primary partition. I used Recuva and PC Inspector to recover the photos, but these utilities only retrieved a fraction of the files. I finished the using the HP Recovery Manager to do a factory reinstallation. All updates were performed. Microsoft Security Essentials installed. Personal data re-introduced.
