The Gateway NV55C is running Windows 7. It begins to boot, but never arrives at the desktop.

Windows 7 Home Premium. Used F8 to access the start-up menu. Selected ‘Repair Computer’. Chkdsk found various unreadable file record segments. LogonUI.exe can’t start. CFGMGR32.dll is missing. Ran sfc /scannow. Prohibited because the system claims that there is a repair pending. Must rename c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml. Safe Mode. Access denied because pending.xml is in use by another program. Needed to do clean boot. msconfig. Selective Startup. clear the Load Startup Items check box.Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. Problem persisted.
I used the kaspersky rescue disk. renamed pending.xml but the error returned. Tried a System Restore to 02/16/2013. Copied cfgmgr32.dll to /Windows/System32/ but it still didn’t work. Performed a Gateway Recovery Factory Restore. It offered the option to store all user files in C:\backup. Installation failed. Now the boot menu does not include an option for “Repair Computer”. Ordered Windows 7 Repair disks from Gateway. Performed a factory install after securing all data. Reinstated the data. Performed hundreds of updates.
